Electrical repair & troubleshooting
What usually goes wrong
Many electrical problems start small: a light that flickers when the dryer runs, a room where half the outlets stopped working, or a switch that buzzes. Causes include a loose connection at an outlet or splice, a worn breaker, an overloaded circuit or damaged wire in a wall. An electrician tests the circuit and should explain what failed and what the repair costs before starting.
Before you call, note which lights and outlets are affected, when it happens and whether anything changed recently, like a new appliance or a storm. That helps the provider narrow it down faster.
Stop and call right away if you smell burning plastic, see scorch marks or sparks, or an outlet or cover plate is hot. Turn that circuit off at the breaker if you can reach it safely. If there is smoke or fire, get out and call 911.
